Levinas in Yorkville (2000) 6:00

Video- Shalom Gorewitz
Music- Christen Clark

Images were recorded on streets surrounding my studio which was on the corner of Lexington and 86th Street, above the Comfort Diner. This was once a German neighborhood. During the early summer I read several essays about and by Emmanuel Levinas, an important 20th century "moral" philosopher, a French Jew who survived World War II and remained in Europe, grappling first hand with the slow healing wounds. Text is based on this material.

A note on collaboration- Christen Clark, who composed and performed the music, and I have been partners on diverse projects for 20 years. He lives in Paris, France and we worked together using the internet.

Technical Information- Video recorded on Sony and Canon miniDV cameras, processed and edited with Final Cut Pro on Apple G-3 and G-4 computers. Original master is miniDV with a dub to betacam. Music was created with Apple G 4 and an assortment of traditional and electronic instruments and processors
