A Small Jubilee

The biblical ideal of a jubilee year is very attractive and ecological. It happens every 49 years, involves the freeing of debts that can't be settled, a kind of national Sabbatical for spiritual self reflection, and a time for the land to rest. A small jubilee happens every seven years, and I heard President Reagan talk about having one in the U.S. The video begins with ominous visuals and music with clips of recent news about violence in South Africa. A cross with a child who might be homeless, emaciated, faith temple, church of believers of commandments of God. Night in amusement park, Beo Morales performs a text about people "getting hypnotized to believing in a god coming from television." The text is echoed, disembodied, the ideas pessimestic about people turning against their neighbors. A fragmented, disturbed view of city architecture, as if it were exploding with light blasts and camera jabs. More and more abstract, then animations, of hidden lovers, while Beo continues his preaching, explaining the small jubilee verbally while one sees figures trying to merge, then violence, a mother holding a dead child. Beo's voice rises in the face of tragedy.
